Tapia/Coello, the time is now: a year of waiting to change the ending

Tonight in Rome, the winners of the fourth edition of the BNL Italy Major will be decided. On court: Tapia/Coello vs. Galan/Chingotto – the same final match-up as in 2024. That was the penultimate win for the chasers, who have since lost the last nine encounters. With the No.1 spot now secure, Arturo and Agustin want to reclaim the Roman crown

Almost a year after the 2024 final, the BNL Italy Major title will once again be contested by the same two pairs. And there couldn’t be better news, as this evening in Rome – second match from 6:30 PM, following the women's final – the best in the world will clash again: on one side, world No.1s Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia; on the other, No.2s Ale Galan and Federico Chingotto, the reigning champions at the Foro Italico. Last year, they claimed a surprise win, 6-3 1-6 6-1, in a final that hinted at a shift in the hierarchy. However, the months that followed told a different story. Now that the top spot in the world rankings is no longer up for grabs, Coello and Tapia are aiming to take back the Roman throne they held in 2023.

Italian fans will get the clash they've dreamed of – the most anticipated and spectacular showdown – the 18th (!) chapter in less than 15 months of a rivalry marked by repeated finals and a result that hasn’t changed in nearly a year. In fact, the last victory for Galan and Chingotto came on July 7, 2024, 343 days ago, when they won in Genoa right after their Roman triumph, taking a 5-3 lead in the head-to-head. Today, the score reads 12-5 in favor of the No.1s, who are on a nine-match winning streak – seven of which came in 2024, including two this year: at the Qatar Major and the Brussels P2. Those victories have often been dominant and have weighed heavily on the psychology of their rivals, building a mental mountain that’s increasingly hard to climb.

Both pairs arrive at the final with similar paths: three straight-set wins and a fourth in a comeback – the last one, in the semifinals on Saturday. Galan and Chingotto had to dig deep against Lebron/Stupaczuk, while Coello and Tapia faced fewer troubles against the young upstarts Leal/Guerrero, dropping a tie-break before taking control in their usual fashion – the one that’s made them nearly untouchable, especially in Majors. In the last seven big tournaments, they’ve lost only once. Which one? The 2024 final in Rome – one of the very few blemishes on a reign that invites comparison with the greatest ever. Arturo and Agustin have waited an entire year to earn the chance to wipe that stain away. And now, the moment has come. It's going to be a show.
