First it was Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega, then Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez. Who will be the queens of the 2025 BNL Italy Major Premier Padel? Forty pairs will compete, with the top four seeds entering directly into the Round of 16 on Thursday, and the battle for the No.1 ranking and the tournament title is more thrilling than ever in this first half of the season. With their win in Buenos Aires, Paula and Ari reclaimed the top spot, but all eyes are also on Bea Gonzalez and Claudia Fernandez, seeded third, runners-up in Argentina and champions in Asuncion. However, the only Major title so far this year went to Gemma Triay (world No.1 for a week after Asuncion) and Delfi Brea, who lead the tour in 2025 titles, having also won in Gijon, Cancun, and Miami.
In the round of 16, Sanchez and Josemaria could face one of the breakout stars of the moment: Martina Calvo, who jumped 18 spots to No.36 after her semifinal run in Buenos Aires with the 'Viking' Aranzazu Osoro. That result follows her quarterfinal appearances in Asuncion and Brussels. Gonzalez and Fernandez are in the same top half of the draw: they could start against Martinez Gomez/Marrero, and possibly meet Paula and Ari in the semifinals. In the bottom half, the No.4 seeds (Sofia Araujo and Andrea Ustero – Round of 16 vs. Guinart/Iglesias?) and No.2 seeds, with Triay and Brea chasing their second BNL Italy Major title. Triay won in 2023 – the first-ever combined Premier Padel event – alongside Marta Ortega.
Projected quarterfinals:
Sanchez/Josemaria (1) vs. Ortega/Alonso (5)
Sainz/Llaguno (7) vs. Gonzalez/Fernandez (3)
Araujo/Ustero (4) vs. Salazar/Virseda (6)
Icardo/Jensen (8) vs. Brea/Triay (2)
