Everything was easy for the world number 2 pair, who reached the final of the BNL Italy Major (their eighth of the season) by wrapping up the match against surprises Victoria Iglesias and Marina Guinart in exactly one hour

The semifinal berth of Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaria ensured that the two will retain the number one ranking as a pair at the end of the BNL Italy Major, regardless of the outcome at the Foro Italico. But in the individual ranking, the story is quite different: Gemma Triay still has a chance to overtake both current leaders, as she briefly did for one week after the Asuncion tournament, before Ari and Paula reclaimed the top spot with their win in Buenos Aires. It’s a goal that the 32-year-old from the Balearic Islands moved closer to by reaching the final in Rome, naturally alongside Delfi Brea, the partner with whom she aims to reshape the hierarchy of women’s padel.
Against Victoria Iglesias and Marina Guinart — the lowest-ranked pair ever to reach the semifinals of a Major (seeded number 11) — the Spanish-Argentine duo were heavy favorites and lived up to expectations on the synthetic grass of Centrale, sealing the match in exactly one hour. There was some balance only up to the sixth game of the opening set, when Gemma and Delfi scored the first break and never looked back, shifting into a gear their opponents couldn’t match. The difference was clear in the number of errors: the number dropped for the second seeds, while it rose for their rivals, making the 6-3 6-1 scoreline inevitable.
“Playing here is always a pleasure,” said Triay after the win. “We’re having a great week and I’m really happy with the level we’re showing. It’s not easy to always reach the final stages of tournaments because there are so many high-level pairs”. “The key to this match? There were several,” added Brea. “We did many things the right way. These results are the outcome of great team work”. On Sunday at 6:30 p.m., Triay and Brea will play their eighth final of the season, aiming for their fifth title of 2025. But that’s not all: Gemma will be chasing her third consecutive Major, after winning in 2024 in Acapulco with Claudia Fernandez and in April in Doha with her current partner. Should she succeed, it would be further proof of who the best player on the planet is.
