Ari and Paula vs Gemma and Delfi: a final for the world No. 1

At 6:30 PM, the women’s final of the BNL Italy Major will take place – the best possible matchup the tournament could have hoped for. Because not only will the world’s top two pairs, Sanchez/Josemaria and Brea/Triay, face off, but for the first time at the Foro Italico, the number one spot in the FIP world rankings will also be on the line

Sanchez/Josemaria vs. Triay/Brea – once again. The BNL Italy Major will feature another final between the world’s top two teams, the sixth such occurrence in the 10 Premier Padel tournaments held in 2025 so far. But this time it will be far from just another final. It’s taking place in the iconic setting of the Foro Italico, and on Sunday (6:30 PM), the battle will not only be for the title in the Eternal City but also for the world No. 1 ranking – a head-to-head race not seen in a long time.

The recent history is well known: after winning in Asunción, Gemma briefly overtook her compatriots, who had jointly held the No. 1 spot for over two years. But the lead only lasted a week – Sanchez and Josemaria won in Buenos Aires and reclaimed the top spot. Now Rome sets the stage for a final showdown, ready to confirm or rewrite the current hierarchy. And beyond the rankings, public opinion is increasingly favoring Brea and Triay. Why? Because in the first half of 2025, they’ve been more successful: four titles to their rivals' three, and three wins in their last four head-to-heads – all in finals – including the first Major of the season in Doha.

The two teams took different paths to the final: the No. 2 pair needed less than three hours total, while the top seeds and reigning champions spent over five hours on court just between Friday and Saturday, leaving a lot of energy behind on Centrale. They might be more fatigued, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be decisive. Against Gonzalez/Fernandez, Ari and Paula showed tremendous mental and physical resilience. Beating them requires a battle for every inch of the court – and even that might not be enough.

While we wait to see who takes the title, Rome already has a winner: the crowd at the BNL Italy Major, who are guaranteed a women’s final of the highest quality. It simply couldn’t get any better than this.
