Marcelo may have lost his debut match, but he has elevated the tournament and the system. "Italian players have raised their level so much recently. It's a way from joining the elite, but in the meantime we've achieved a lot. In a few seasons we will have the same chances to get ahead as the Spaniards and Argentines"

Marcelo Capitani has surrendered in the first round, yet long live Marcelo Capitani. The 46 year-ol Italian champion has experienced here his second Major Premier Padel circuit main draw match after qualifying in Doha. And although it was a defeat today, the motivation remains, and the thought of a future accomplished Italian team is mouthwatering.
"First - says Marcelo, in the cage with three Spaniards, Duran alongside him, Del Castillo and Luque on the other side of the net - when you lose you have to pay tribute to your opponents. The ball was heavy and I could not control it, my lob was short, the return was often high. It was also very hot. I'm 46, and although I feel fit it is not easy to stay on top for so long for someone my age... (laughter, ed) ".
"Despite all this, I am particularly happy because a tournament of this level in an iconic place such as the Foro Italico is something that should be cherished, it's an environment you have to nurture. We have to congratulate the FIP, Luigi Carraro and the Italian Tennis Federation for helping to bring this event here. It is a special occasion and I hope that it will help to develop Padel in the country ".
It is not just about wins and losses. It is also about creating a winning movement, one with character and ability to permeate the culture and stay in people's hearts long.
"Children - explains Capitani - are able to watch all the strongest Padel world champions here. The Premier Padel circuit aims at representing change and making the history of Padel. I was also in Doha in the main draw, where we were ousted in the first round with my partner, having previously won two matches in qualifying, which is quite something at my age. If I will keep on going? Why not, if I'm having fun and if my legs respond I would like to keep playing and to experience the World Cup again."
Meanwhile there is a whole system that is emerging, sparking much hope for the future. "Italian players have raised their level so much recently. It takes time to join the Spaniards' elite circle, but in the meantime we've achieved a lot. Once we used to step into the cage and we automatically lost 6-0 6-0, now many Italians play against the strongest. By preparing young children, in a few seasons Italy will have the same chances of moving up as the Spaniards and Argentines".
