The early rounds of the BNL Italy Major already tell a different story than the one that was expected. Despite most pairs fulfilling their duties, there are several struggling, including some which were expected to reach the more final stages of the tournament. Here is the situation among the women and the men.

In the women’s category, the number 3 seeded pair, Brea and Gonzalez, had a comfortable debut, defeating the Spanish duo Velasco and Canovas in just one hour and 14 minutes. They only conceded three games, proving that they are potential winners with their constant positive energy and their serious yet fun loving approach. In the world of padel, they have been nicknamed the 'Superpibas', and they posses the potential to go far in the tournament and challenge the two leading pairs on the Roman leaderboard.

In the men’s category, Lucas Bergamini and Victor Ruiz continue to face difficulties but managed to succeed and take the victory. They had to endure another endless tie-break to overcome Duran and Fermosell, this time the finalists of Milan 2022 prevailed with an 11-9 score to then lead in the second set. Another seeded pair has exited the tournament, following Gonzalez and Gutierrez. The 10th seeded player, Brazilian Lucas Campagnolo, who had already experienced physical problems on Tuesday, couldn't recover in time. Alongside Garrido, the pair was supposed to face Solano and Chozas, who now advance to the quarterfinals.

Furthermore, two more seeded pairs have fallen in the men's tournament. This shows that this week’s extremely challenging playing conditions are also affecting the star players. Among the victims of the heat (and their rivals) we find Pablo Lima, who, together with Silingo, attempted to stay afloat by winning the second set before succumbing to Pedro and Alvaro Melendez Amaya, suffering a 6-0 defeat in the decisive set. The 13th-seeded pair, Moyano/Gil, also exits the tournament (against Munoz and Ramirez).

In contrast, Coello and Tapia had a straightforward debut against Bautista and Diaz, confirming what everyone already knew: at this moment of the season they are in the best overall shape compared to the others. Last but not least, Bela. It is none other than Fernando Belasteguin, the idol of Rome, who led Miguel Yanguas to victory against Gonzalez and Luque, with a challenging outcome of 6-4 6-4. It is like a learning lesson for the audience in the capital city (and beyond) every time Bela is on the court. There will be more opportunities to witness his mastery throughout the week. Be warned not to miss them.
